Portimão Algarve
Portimão Algarve is, after Faro, the second largest city in the Algarve and the largest commercial port. Portugal’s largest sardine fleet is also housed here, located at the mouth of the Rio Arade. The fish processing industry is therefore an important source of income in this city. Tourism is also an important pillar and a lot of attention is paid to this in many ways. Characteristic is the new boulevard along which it is wonderful to walk and the many terraces are inviting. On either side of the famous metal bridge, you can eat sardines prepared on-site. Navigating the ancient trade route via the River Arade to the former capital of the Algarve, Silves is another tourist attraction.
The Algarve’s largest hospital is located in Portimão and all specialist treatments are carried out there. However, the second largest hospital in the Algarve is the HPA, the Hospital Particular do Algarve. Located between Alvor and Portimao, this hospital is widely acclaimed for its excellent doctors who often speak several languages. The city centre hav Portimão is constantly being modernised while preserving its historical character as much as possible. The old town of Portimão is characterised by its friendly atmosphere and many shops and restaurants. In less than 15 minutes you can walk to the city centre, as well as to the tourist part of town, called Praia da Rocha.
